Educators in Bedford County schools instruct approximately 6,000 students annually, working to prepare young minds for the challenges they and our community will face in the coming years. This year has presented local schools with tremendous challenges as the pandemic has forced closures, remote learning and virtual classes.
In Bedford County, businesses and community organizations continue to find new ways to guide the next generations of citizens to lead the community into the future. Youth Leadership Bedford County has seen promising results, with many of its early graduates joining the local work force and creating real change for the area.
Public education in Bedford County is provided by five school districts, plus a small portion of one district, which is located in and primarily serves Blair County. Twelve private school options are available in Bedford County. Together they serve around 300 students. The HOPE for Hyndman Charter School is the only charter school in the county which offers curriculum for grades K-12.
Playing a vital role in the future of Bedford County, Bedford County Technical Center (BCTC) serves both the Bedford and Everett school districts. Tussey Mountain, Northern Bedford and Chestnut Ridge, along with HOPE for Hyndman send students to BCTC on a paid tuition basis. BCTC serves approximately 500 students in grades 10-12.
Allegany College of Maryland administers adult non-credit programs for BCTC. These range from workforce development training customized for local businesses, to personal enrichment, food services certifications, and more.
Students who are enrolled with BCTC can apply early for college with Allegany College of Maryland, which operates a facility on land donated by the Everett Area School District. Thanks to a generous $1 million EITC donation from Everett Cash Mutual, currently all Bedford County students accepted into the Early College program at the ACM Bedford County Campus, will receive free tuition, registration fees and textbooks.
Graduates planning to continue their education have several other excellent options that are close to home including, Frostburg State University, Mount Aloysius College, Saint Francis University, and Penn State University.
