Fort Bedford served as a key stop on Forbes Trail, the first significant overland path connecting this region to the early colonies. Over time, Forbes Trail evolved into Forbes Road, then the Lincoln Highway – the nation’s first transcontinental highway linking the East Coast to the Pacific. Locally, several historic stagecoach taverns along this route remain active today, operating as charming inns, restaurants, and gift shops. This vital artery, known today as Route 30, runs through the heart of Bedford County. In 1940, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation opened the initial segment of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which included access in Bedford County. Now over 85 years old, the turnpike remains the fastest way to cross the state by automobile. Another major advancement in Bedford County’s transportation network was the development of Interstate 99, which begins in Bedford and extends to Interstate 80, with potential for future connections into New York State.

Bedford County Airport (KHMZ) is a general aviation airport featuring a 5,005-foot runway capable of accommodating twin jets, Gulfstream series, and tri-jets. Bun-Air operates several jets as well as smaller propeller aircraft from the facility, providing on-demand charter service. In 2025, both the airport and Bun-Air earned induction into the Bedford County Business Hall of Fame for their enduring impact.
